Cardio machines

Cardio equipment for UK homes covers everything from silent walking pads for flats to full-size rowers for garages. The single most useful thing to know before buying: noise travels differently through floors than you'd expect, which is why we measure impact noise separately from motor noise — and which machine suits your space depends entirely on that difference.

What we cover

How to choose

  • Noise matters in UK homes more than anywhere else.

In a flat with neighbours below, impact noise (footfall on a treadmill or rowing machine stroke) travels through the floor. We measure motor noise and impact noise separately because they're completely different problems.

  • Folded dimensions don't equal actual storage footprint.

A treadmill that folds to 60 cm wide still needs 150 cm in front of it to actually walk on. Always check the usable space, not just the folded size.

  • Check the max user weight and check your electricity.

Most UK treadmills need a dedicated outlet. Many folding models have user weight limits lower than their non-folding equivalents. Verify both before buying.

  • Walking pads and treadmills solve different problems.

A walking pad is silent and minimal. A treadmill lets you run at speed and incline. For UK flats, a walking pad often beats a cheap folding treadmill.

  • Used cardio equipment is worth checking carefully.

Motors, belts, and impact-absorbing surfaces wear out. Second-hand cardio gear should come with a warranty or a clear reason it's being sold.

Every cardio product on this site is either a hands-on review (we bought, built, measured and photographed it) or a research-based comparison (specs, UK pricing tracked weekly, warranty terms, analysed owner reviews). Read how we test to understand which is which and how we score.
